on March 1, 2010

Did you know that the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird has been banned from Nova Scotia high schools?

I’m speechless.

That’s sad. I love that story. I first read it as a pre-teen. We covered it in 10th gr Eglish too.

Uh… guwha? Really? S’no-way! … Okay I’ll stop talking like Wayne from Wayne’s World now.

Really though, what is the a reason?

  3. Diana Gallagher says:

Why would they do that? Is any reason given?

Apparently our children (the most informed generation on the planet), might start yelling the “n” word in the school playground if they actually see it in a book.

Never mind the fact that the book itself is a fabulous resource for all human beings that people are people regardless of the colour of their skin or their state of mind.

All the teachers and students I spoke with think it’s ridiculous…..which it is….but the powers that be must be obeyed….

Wow, this is unbelievable. To Kill a Mockingbird is such an amazing book, and I probably never would have read it had it not been for high school.
I mean really, they’re afraid of kids saying the N-word? If that’s the case they should ban i-pods, cellphones, computers, and the internet from school because they’re more likely to pick it up there then anywhere else.

I mean really, I don’t think they even bleep it out on TV anymore…No that this is a good thing but getting rid of a classic when kids are over exposed to begin with is just plain ridiculous.

    You are absolutely right, Sarah.
